Fundamentals.

FUNDAMENTALS! The word of the day is fundamentals.

It's extremely frustrating when the kids you're working with know what's "split step", or "double drag between the legs"... but don't know what is weak or strong side, or don't know how to stop properly and take the first step properly.

Watching college or euro basketball or even the Spurs, you don't see a lot of flash but you see the fundamentals, you see great spacing and timing which is mostly neglected is skill training. The older and more experienced I get the more I step away from all the flash training. I started focusing mostly on basketball essentials like footwork and using the right angles rather then doing backflips with the ball.

As soon as you search basketball training on the internet you see all the moves that are done going from left to right, from one elbow to the other while its just not realistic in an actual 5 on 5 game. The basketball court is so small that if you attack to wide you'll immediately step into help defense.

Great article! Completely agree with you. The flashy stuff might look cool and impress some, but it's the spacing and timing that really help in making you successful on the court. Having good spacing is the foundation of penetrating and scoring.

What Our Clients Are Saying

My children have been training with Coach P.  for approximately 3 months and they have significantly improved. Coach P. is very attentive – always focused on the kids, correcting their form and challenges them during every session. Within 3 months, my children have improved significantly where they are now able to compete at an AAU level.
