7 things to do in a pick up game...

I don't play pick up games often, but when I do I very often get disappointed by the competition. Games are normally very chaotic - offensively and defensively.

Players tend to just "run and gun" without any thought behind it, and the best case scenario is that they kick the ball out to a semi open player while leaning way back as they were trying to make a shot over two defensive players.

So how can you improve your performance as well as help your teammates get better?

1. TALK! Pick up games have got the be the quietest places out there. Players don't talk! Basketball game should be a constant conversation between the players on offense and defense. On offense make sure to call for ball when you're open, call "SHOT" when somebody shoots, say screen right or screen left if an on ball screen is being set. On defense say out loud who you're guarding, if you're playing help defense make sure to say "I got help", if you're guarding and screen, either say switch to switch or go through.

2. MOVE! Most players just stand in place or run in circles trying to receive a pass within the same spot eg. on the wing. Instead of trying to get the ball and be the next Curry, cut through the middle of the paint with your hands ready to get the ball. If you don't receive a pass just go to the opposite corner. From here you'll have two basic options: cut to the basket or lift along side the side line keeping your hands ready to receive a pass.

3. Set a ball screen. Setting a ball screen will help the ball handler drive to the rim, and potentially score or pass the ball to an open man, as driving is the best way to engage the help defense.

4. Set an off ball screen. If you find yourself on the wing, set an off ball screen in the corner, and help your teammate get open. Very often you'll receive a pass in the corner as the defense will be engaged in guarding the player who you set a screen for, so keep your hand ready.

5. If you're in the corner you can call for an of ball screen and lift to the ball, or cut to the basket and set a back screen for your teammate in the opposite corner.

6. If you're the ball handler don't only drive and wish for the best. Slow down, try to pass the ball to the player who cuts through the middle. If you pass one pass away you can chase your pass and set an on ball screen or play hand off. Or after you pass the ball go the opposite way to set an off ball screen. You'll probably find yourself on the wing or in the corner.

7. If you decide to drive, try to drive as tight to the defensive player as you can. It will be harder for them to recover and try to get in front of you, also you won't run into the help defense.
